Green Resource Guide

I designed this booklet + fold out map for the Converging Liberations Residency (CLR) at MASS MoCA in conjunction with the groups Assets for Artists and The CreateWell Fund. The Converging Liberations Residency was a one-month, fully funded residency program for “Massachusetts”-based artists of color, which took place at The Studios at MASS MoCA in the Massachusetts Berkshires. The designers of the program, bashezo, Cierra Peters, and Nadroj Holmes (The CreateWell Fund) wanted to create a guide for the artists taking part in the residency to detail the artist workshops taking place and to highlight some of the BIPoC-owned businesses in and around occupied Wabanoki, Algonquin, Mohawk, Mohican, and Pocumtuc territories (aka North Adams).

Nadroj and CLR’s intern, Odiase Williamson, curated the content for the guide. Because they wanted to include a map, I thought the best structure for the guide would be a small, 4.75in×6.5in booklet that could fold out into a larger, 13in×19in map. This would allow residents to carry the guide with them across MASS MoCA’s 24 acres of studio and museum space or out into the North Adams community. I used a restrictive color palette and starburst glyphs to unify the content and typefaces from the BIPoC-founded Velvetyne Type Foundry. To print the guides, I worked with Red Sun Press, a Boston-based and cooperatively-managed studio supporting local nonprofits and socially responsible businesses. Nadroj and I then cut, folded, and assembled all 30 guides. Map illustration by Odiase Williamson.
