Graduate Programs Guide
Year: 2021Client: The School of Visual Arts at Boston University
The Graduate Programs Guide showcases each of the post-grad programs offered at BU SVA and was used as a take-home piece at graduate school fairs. The guidebook is designed to convey a large amount of information in a very short amount of time. It uses the neo-grotesque typeface, Neue Haas Grotesk, at a larger-than-average point size for optimal legibility. Full-page and full-spread images line many of the pages, with some images split from one spread to the next to further encourage a quick flip through of the book. The design is accented with a simple, rotating color palette that helps the viewer navigate easily through the book, without relying heavily on the table of contents.
Green Resource Guide
Year: 2021Client: The School of Visual Arts at Boston University
The Green Resource Guide was designed for artists taking part in the Converging Liberations Residency at MASS MoCA , a one-month, fully funded residency program for Massachusetts-based artists of color. The guide details workshops taking place during the residency and highlights some of the BIPoC-owned businesses in and around North Adams, MA.
The guide is a 4.75in×6.5in booklet that folds out into a larger, 13in×19in map. It uses a restrictive color palette and starburst glyphs to unify the content and typefaces from the BIPoC-founded Velvetyne Type Foundry. The guides were printed at Red Sun Press, a Boston-based and cooperatively-managed studio supporting local nonprofits.
Artist Zines
Year: 2020Client: Print Ain’t Dead + artists Autumn Ahn and Joanne Petit-Frère
Hands in the Studio for Black Lives Matter (images 1–3) This zine/fold out poster features artwork from Joanne Petit-Frère’s Studio Hands series. On the front page the text “All Black Lives Matter” in the typeface Martin by Tré Seals overlays the artwork.
a galaxy on my plaster ceiling (images 4–9) The format of this multi-part publication artwork unfolds with the promise of deeper shared reflection with the reader upon interacting between the text and the added red translucent page. Through the proposed act of searching and recovering the broken text by lining up the graphic and textual clues, this zine asks us to consider what new worlds are possible in our lived traditions, and the spiritual journey they suggest.
Dysphoria/Euphoria
Year: 2020Client: Part of Julian Parikh’s MFA thesis work at Boston University
Dysphoria/Euphoria explores a series of extremes—ones that can be quantified and ones that cannot. It shares both the dysphoric and euphoric thoughts of transgender men, transmasculine, and non-binary people. Empty gel packets of testosterone, a hormone replacement therapy drug that must be taken every day, line the pages of this book. In the first half, they cover every page, and the dysphoric thoughts are forced into the rigid grid system they create. In the second half, the packets disappear into the French fold and euphoric thoughts break out of the grid system to flow freely across the pages.
